Flagstaff hotel plans get approval Proposal still must get official approval from zoning hearing board tonight

A proposed hotel in Jim Thorpe passed another hurdle on Tuesday.

The Carbon County Planning Commission voted to recommend conditional preliminary plan approval for the proposed Flagstaff Hotel.Surreal Properties Inc. hopes to construct a 23,960-square-foot, 35-room hotel on 28.2026 acres on top of Flagstaff Mountain. The hotel would be located at the site of the current Flagstaff Ballroom and Gallo's Restaurant.Ivan O. Meixell Jr., county planner, outlined the issues he saw with the revised plans in a six-page letter. The board first reviewed the plan in February 2014, and was rejected, but major revisions have been made since then.Meixell said the plan, as submitted, lacks minor preliminary plan and/or design criteria requirements of Jim Thorpe Borough's Land Development Ordinances.Jim Thorpe Borough Council earlier this month, gave conditional preliminary plan approval for the project.Meixell said the borough's zoning hearing board must still officially approve the plan tonight. The zoning hearing board met previously on June 25 and approved the plan, but following the meeting, it was determined that the meeting had not been legally advertised, meaning that the action could not be made official.Issues that Meixell pointed out included lighting, current and proposed water and sewer lines and missing retaining wall details for the parking area. The letter continues that Surreal Properties must meet Jim Thorpe Subdivision and Land Development Ordinances, Chapter 377 Stormwater Management Requirements and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Erosion and Sedimentation Control Program and state Stormwater Best Management Practices, and receive approval on all permits before proceeding. The commission also "strongly pointed out that all required permits and approvals from Jim Thorpe Borough and the various state and county agencies will be required to be obtained by the developer before final plan submission. Failure to obtain the required permits/approvals as required by Jim Thorpe Borough's SALDO and state Department of Environmental Protection before the final plan submission may result in an unfavorable final plan recommendation."The plans for the hotel have been in the works nearly a decade and have been scaled back from a five-story hotel to its current plans. In other matters, the board also reorganized, naming Al Feuerstein chairman, Fred Bresswein vice chairman and George Karas secretary.
