Man charged with assaulting police officer after assaulting girlfriend

A Monroe County man has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend and a police officer.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Ryan Kennedy of the Kidder Township Police Department in the case against Jerriel Smith:

Kennedy was dispatched to the Econo Lodge for a report of a woman who said she was assaulted by her boyfriend, Smith, 37, of Long Pond.

Reports from dispatch indicated that Smith went to a room and began forcing the door open, and after unsuccessful attempts, he threw a metal grill through the double pane glass window and attempted entry.

Police found Smith in the area of the room where glass was visible.

Smith then fled to another room and barricaded himself by locking the door and also the dead bolt.

After several attempts to have Smith step out and being told “(expletive) you, get a warrant,” police gained entry by breaking the glass of the double pane window.

Smith lunged at officers and police used a Taser to put him in handcuffs.

When Smith recovered, he became aggressive and kicked an officer in the thigh area.

Police attempted to put him in leg shackles and he kicked the officer in the face.

The woman had abrasions on her arm and shoulder area, and also was holding their 5-month-old son when Smith assaulted her.

Smith faces charges of aggravated assault; simple assault; recklessly endangering another person; endangering welfare of children; criminal mischief - damage property; disorderly conduct; and resisting arrest/other law enforcement.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $250,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing July 14 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
