Nesquehoning councilman faces misdemeanor charges

A Nesquehoning councilman faces misdemeanor charges after he struck his wife during an argument.

Nesquehoning police patrolman Carl Breiner charged George J. Sabol III, 65, of the 100 block of Padua Avenue, for an incident that happened at his home on Friday.

According to the affidavit filed by Nesquehoning police, at 5:25 p.m., officers were called to Sabol’s home for a domestic altercation between the residents.

When Breiner arrived, he found Sabol sitting on the front porch and the victim on the phone with dispatchers.

Breiner said the victim was upset and crying so he instructed her to go inside while he spoke with Sabol.

Sabol admitted that the two got into an argument and he struck the victim, who was holding their 1-year-old family member at the time.

Sabol also grabbed her by her hair.

Once Jim Thorpe police arrived to assist at the scene, Breiner spoke with the victim, who said that Sabol became “very angry” and struck her in the shoulder and on the face, before grabbing her by the hair and pulling. She was afraid that she would drop the child as a result of the altercation and also complained of significant pain in her shoulder.

Sabol was charged with one count each recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and harassment.

He was arraigned on Saturday before District Judge Joseph Homanko in Weatherly and sent to Carbon County Correctional Facility on $2,500 bail, which he posted on Tuesday.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek on July 14.

Last month, Nesquehoning Borough Council voted to censure Sabol as a result of his expletive-laced outburst at the May council meeting.

At the time, Sabol’s tone turned heated after council began discussing no parking along one borough street. He cursed at Councilman Lou Paul and then at council as a whole before walking out of the meeting.

Sabol has sat on council since March 2015, when he was voted in to fill a vacant seat that had been created by the passing of then Councilman Robert Marouchoc.

He won the seat later that year and was sworn in for his first term in 2016. He was later reelected for a second term in 2019.
