Weissport considering an ordinance on fireworks

Weissport Borough Council discussed the idea of putting in place an ordinance dealing with fireworks in the borough.

Council member James Osborne showed a cellphone video he had taken of a fire that was started in a trash bin under the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge because someone set off fireworks that ended up in the bin, setting it alight. The video showed flames burning several feet in the air.

“This happened at 1:40 in the morning. What if it had been someone’s home? What if it had hit a person? We need to look at adding an ordinance limiting dealing with fireworks in the borough limits.”

The rest of the council members agreed and will look at what is needed to draw up such an ordinance.

In other news, borough council awarded the Bridge Street Project to Barker & Barker Paving, Inc. of Bethlehem for the amount of $149,190. The borough has available $138,916, and is looking at how to raise the funds for the remaining $10,274, possibly from the liquid fuels fund, if it is approved. The borough is still working with state Rep. Doyle Heffley’s office to see about obtaining funds from the American Rescue Fund.

Samuel Carey from Hope Community Fellowship Church announced that the church would be holding a Help Your Neighborhood Day on Aug. 7, and asked the borough if it had any small projects needed for which the church could offer help.

Hope Community will hold another movie night in the Weissport Borough Park on Sept. 10. The name of the movie has not been chosen yet. More information will be released soon.
