Plans made for Highridge travel plaza

A Burger King and convenience store are planned for a travel plaza at the Highridge Business Park.

The park is 2,000 acres covering Butler, Cass and Foster townships between exits 116 and 119 off of Interstate 81.

Onvo, a Scranton-based company, which has 32 travel plazas and gas stations, and other properties in Pennsylvania and New York, acquired the property June 15.

The 37-acre site located off exit 119 of Interstate 81 in Cass Township will feature “premium fuel, food service and a convenience store,” according to a press release. Construction of Onvo Travel Plaza is slated to start this fall and be completed by May 2022. Ample parking is planned. Up to 70 employees could be hired for the restaurant and convenience store.

“The property also has potential for additional retail, food service, and hospitality development,” the company said.

Frank Zukas, president of Schuylkill Economic Development Corp., said the plans are good economic news for the county. More than 4,000 people work at Highridge, he said. SEDCO developed the park that is home to distribution and warehouse operations such as Wegmans, Lowes, Walmart, Tyson Foods, Dollar General, JELD-WEN, Hollander Sleep Products and Hudson Bay Company.
