Palmerton revisits discussion on potential creation of skate park

Palmerton officials continue to ponder the potential creation of a skate park as a means to curb vandalism in its borough park.

Councilman Andrew Hollywood said at last week’s borough council meeting that he and borough Manager Donna McGarry recently attended a recreational committee meeting.

Hollywood said part of the discussion centered on adding a skate park, but that the issue is finding a suitable location, with the Seventh Street Field perhaps chief among them.

McGarry concurred that the Seventh Street Field may be the most ideal fit for a skate park.

“It’s open,” McGarry said. “The Seventh Street Field, it’s in the center of town.”

Hollywood said other potential locations could include the Elmer Valo Field, the west side of town, and Third and Franklin.

“We need to determine where a good location would be,” Hollywood said.

However, resident Marj Federanich said she believes more public input is necessary at this point.

“We need more public opinion,” Federanich said. “We would invite them to the June meeting.”

Councilwoman Holly Hausman-Sell asked whether they should be surveying the community’s youth.

Federanich said that about six or seven kids said they would like to see a skate park when they were asked what they would like to see in the borough.

“It’s been spoken to all over town,” she said, adding that the feedback she’s heard has been “fantastic.”

Hollywood said he believes the Seventh Street Field “seems like the ideal location.”

Council President Terry Costenbader then suggested that the committee come back with a recommendation to council.

Last month, Federanich suggested the potential creation of a skate park due to vandalism that occurred to the benches and the bandstand with skateboards.

McGarry noted at that time that per borough code, bicycle riding and skateboards are among the activities prohibited in the bandstand.
