St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Summit Hill is following Christ's teachings and feeding the hungry.
The church recently hosted a food drive in honor of the parish's saint's feast day, which was March 19.Most Italian-American families celebrate St. Joseph's Day by hosting a table of bounty to show their gratitude to God. To keep with tradition, the church decided to share its bounty and help the town's families who have fallen on hard times.Non-perishable and canned food items were collected during the March 15 and 16 and 22 and 23 Masses.Nathan Halenar, one of the organizations of the food drive, said approximately 500 non-perishable food items were collected from parishioners. On Sunday evening, the items were boxed up and given to the Summit Hill Food Pantry, which will now distribute the food to the families of the community that utilize the pantry.John Williams of the pantry was impressed by the donations and was thankful for the church's continued support.
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS The Rev. James Burdess, pastor of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Summit Hill, left, helps John Williams of the Summit Hill Food Pantry, package the items that were collected during Masses the past two weekends.
