Chestnuthill limits traffic on Lake Mineola Road
Chestnuthill Township supervisors approved plans Tuesday to make a part of Lake Mineola Road one way going north from Water Lily Lane to Route 715.
Township engineer Chris McDermott recommended turning that section of Lake Mineola Road into one way. He said the roadway in that section is gravel and about 15 feet wide.It has very limited sight distance and could pose a safety issue. For that reason, he recommends placing a stop sign at the intersection of Water Lily Lane and Lake Mineola Road.McDermott also recommended lowering the speed on the road to 15 miles per hour.Due to the size, composition and limited sight distance, a motorist can't travel faster than 25 miles per hour safely, he said.According to the minutes from the work session on Jan. 20, residents requested that speed bumps be installed on the roadway. The township originally proposed starting the one-way section at Burrus Drive, but changed the plans after residents suggested it would be more feasible to begin at Water Lily Lane.Township manager David Albright said, "With the Pocono Health Systems opening soon, part of the thought process was that there might be additional traffic heading up there."The new facility is on Route 209 near Lake Mineola Road."We've done traffic counts and most of the traffic at a ratio of 2:1 is heading north anyway," Albright said.McConnell also recommended placing a stop sign at the intersection of Water Lily Lane and Lake Mineola.Albright said the signs would be ordered and the township will give the residents in the affected area 30-day notice of the road's direction change. The township will also post a temporary sign letting motorists know the roadway will soon be one-way only.At the meeting, township supervisors also agreed to renew the contract with West End Community Ambulance Association.C.J. Dickinson, business manager for the ambulance company, said having this designation is important to them because it means that emergency calls will be allotted to West End Ambulance first. If West End is not able to respond to the call, then another emergency provider will be called. This helps to reduce competition for West End Ambulance, he said.West End Ambulance has been our provider for years, Albright said."We've been pleased with their service and their willingness to work with the township," he said. The contract renewal is effective until 2018.Bernie Kozen, executive director of the West End Park and Open Space Commission, said six hikers came out for the Get Outdoors Hike. The cold weather was the culprit for the low attendance. He also announced the upcoming programs. The events include: bingo at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20; Pine Cone Bird Feeders from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 21; a trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show on March 2; and the Easter Egg Hunt at 1 p.m. March 28.
