A brush fire in Eldred Township Monday afternoon was quickly brought under control thanks to the Kunkletown Fire Company and the help of Polk and West End fire companies, and a helicopter from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
“When I got here, the fire had burned quite a ways uphill, and that is something we don’t like to see,” said Polk Township fireman Matt Schessler.
One of the problems was getting access to the fire in the woods.
Keystone Road had the closest access to the fire, but the dense screen of picker bushes made it impossible to get through. The water trucks had to be brought in off Fiddletown Road and driven almost a mile through rutted fields.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources made two water drops, helping to contain the fire.
According to West End Deputy Chief Mike Manfre, the burned area was nearly an acre, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is looking into the cause of the fire.
