The Freemansburg-based Alan Kunsman Roofing and Siding expects to complete the roof repair for the Carbon County Friends of Animals this week.
The bid for the new roof came in at an estimated $53,000.According to Chris Horvath, crew member, the repair progress is going smoothly."We removed 30 percent of the roof today, taking off the old roof down to the concrete deck. Then we will spray foam adhesive for the new rubber to stick to," he said. The project is nearly complete. The shelter houses anywhere from 125-150 cats at one time, taking in over 800 feline per year. The roof damage had become obvious after the leakage during last year's winter. The shelter had moved to the new building, located at 77 W. 13th St., Jim Thorpe, last December."We bought the building as is," board member Kimmy Mulik said. "We'd been looking for years but nothing had really worked out before. When we bought the building we heard that there were some roof issues. We had someone look, but it was hard to tell because there was snow on the building at the time.""It needed to be done, it was time," Horvath said. The nonprofit shelter can only operate on the continued support and donations from the community. The repairs severely needed have been funded through those donations but the shelter may come up short for the bill's bottom line without continued community support.Anyone wishing to donate any amount, either in cash or check, can donate through the mail with a note on the funds, attention: Roof Fund or in person from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week at the shelter. A list of upcoming fund raisers can be found on the CCFOA Facebook page or website
