Truck traffic concerns Mahoning
Mahoning Township supervisors are concerned that increased truck traffic will take its toll on several of its roadways.
Supervisor Brian Reeser said at Wednesday morning’s special meeting that he’s concerned that the trucks are using Troxell Road and Gilberts Hill Road as their main thoroughfare.
The board said the roads are getting ripped up, and they would rather see the trucks use a state highway instead while the Route 443/Blakeslee Boulevard widening project continues.
Supervisor Myron Blahy and roadmaster Nevin Frey plan to talk to a project manager at the site to see if they can figure out an alternate route to minimize the heightened truck traffic on those roads.
Last month supervisors said they were concerned with the increased traffic along Ashtown Road due to the widening project.
Supervisors said at that time they were looking at using temporary speed bumps and a series of signs along Ashtown Road and surrounding roads to advise drivers of their options.
The project began in February and will rehabilitate the portion of roadway from the Carbon Plaza Mall in Mahoning Township to the Route 209/Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge in Lehighton.
H&K Group Inc. of Skippack is the general contractor on the $21 million project that is anticipated to be complete in September 2024.
The project will add a center turn lane along the corridor, and also add left-turn lanes and traffic signal improvements at the Route 443 intersections with Mall Road/Mall Lane and East Penn Street/Mahoning Mountain Road designed to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes.
Additionally, it calls for drainage improvements; utility installation/relocation; new guard rail; as well as pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.
It will also rehabilitate the Route 443 bridge over Mahoning Creek, and the Route 902/South Ninth Street bridge over Mahoning Creek will be replaced and the intersection of Route 902, and Route 443 will be realigned slightly to the east to make a “T” intersection.
