Tresckow Fire Company's request to co-sign a loan is rejected

The Banks Township Board of Supervisors in northern Carbon County on Wednesday night voted 3-0 to deny a request from the Tresckow Fire Company for the township to co-sign a loan to help the firemen dig out of a financial dilemma they are facing.

The firemen sought to borrow between $30,000 and $40,000 to help them maintain the company's two main buildings, as well as to revive the third building - a social hall - but the supervisors said "no," contending they have concerns about an ongoing investigation involving the social hall. The hall, in which there had been located a licensed bar, is closed down due to finances. Officials indicated the social club is under investigation by police.Supervisor Rick Porpiglia, who motioned to deny the firefighters' request, said the supervisors want to be supportive of the firefighters' efforts, but have concerns about the social quarters and club.Meanwhile, firemen indicated they are seeking legal advice regarding the status of the company, particularly election of officers and the state of the company's charter. Attorney Joseph Woitko, township solicitor, said he could not offer advice to the firemen because of the potential for a conflict of interest. In another township matter, the supervisors said the township is involved ine a legal battle with former secretary Charles Schalles, who was relieved of his duties in January, regarding unemployment compensation. Schalles claims there is sufficient paperwork to support his claim, although Woitko pointed out the records are not in compliance with state laws and told the supervisors he wants to see more documentation to assist him in denying the claim as the supervisors had requested.
