Snow days lead Tamaqua to move graduation date

If people are wondering whether or not we've weathered one of the worst winters in history, they can look no further than the changes to the Tamaqua School District calendar, where graduation day has been moved from its traditional Friday for the first time in 50 years.

During a committees' meeting Tuesday, school administrators faced facts. There have been too many snow days, which means that the planned May 29 graduation, and its traditional all-night party at the school, must be changed."Graduation will be June 2," said Tamaqua Area School District Superintendent Carol Makuta. "The senior class adviser is Roseann Weinrich, and she has communicated with the parents of the seniors.""The parents are understanding," she said. "Hopefully knowing now will be enough time for our parents to prepare for their celebrations."Makuta said she believes the Friday night graduation and all-night party have been happening at the school since it was built in 1969. Before that, the all-night party was held at the Hometown Armory. There were seven total snow days to make up: Nov. 26, Dec. 11, Jan. 26, Jan. 30, Feb. 2, Feb. 9 and March 5. Nov. 26 was made up on Jan 19 and a teacher in-service day was moved. Dec. 11 was made up on Feb 16, and the district conducted an Act 80 day. Jan 26. will be made up on April 7, and Jan 30 will be made up on April 2. Feb. 2 will be made up on April 6. Feb. 9 will be added to end of year, June 1, and March 5 will be added to end of year June 2.June 2 is the last student day and graduation will be held June 2. Teacher in service days will be June 3 and 4.The changes to the school calendar have been approved in committee and must be approved during the board meeting next week. Other actions approved by committee:A repository sale for $100 of a property at 160 W. Spruce St., Tamaqua.Approval of the SchuylkillTechnology Center budget and a 17 percent quota formula, which translates to a $7,622 cost perstudent from the Tamaqua School District to attend the technology center.
