East Penn supervisors discuss road woes

The public comments at the beginning of the East Penn Township Supervisors Meeting were filled with road repair questions for residents.

The board continues to try to negotiate an ever-growing to-do list in repairs. The same three roads mentioned at last month’s meeting, Pinoak, Stone Mountain and Hollow, were once again topic of discussion.Resident Duane Eidem asked the board for an estimated repair timeline for the three township roads.“We are short on people right now,” Supervisor Deanna Cunfer told him. This fact was backed up by an approved resignation of road crew member Ryan Heckman later in the meeting. A timeline was not given to the residents.Barry Fink and Juanita Koch both added Pine Wood Road to the repair list. Fink said the shoulders on either side of the road were growing increasingly deeper. He told the board on one side the ditch has grown to the depth of an estimated foot and a little more than half a foot on the other side.Cunfer told the residents she would contact the engineer. “We will see what the schedule is and see what he recommends,” she said.Nancy Hoppel also had a road in mind for the repair list, Bake Oven Road.“It’s a national bird watching area and the Appalachian Trail is there,” she said.“There are other ways to get where you are going. I wouldn’t use it,” Cunfer told her.“But it’s a township road. We pay taxes on it,” Hoppel replied.“There’s other roads that need attention,” Cunfer said.“So nothing’s going to be done. God bless all the tourists that go on that road, and their oil pans,” Hoppel said. “It’s a poor reflection of East Penn.”“No it isn’t,” Supervisor Dean Kercsmar said. “Come to any budget meeting, I encourage all residents to attend a meeting. If you’ve got $5 you can’t spend $5,000.” Kercsmar said he would see about getting a traffic study for the road.Along with repair, a few roads are in need of signs. Residents listed four different roads that are now missing signs in the township: Stone Mountain, Hoffman, Nothstein and Wertman Hollow roads. The cost for the required 9-inch high, 6-inch letter signs range from $24 to $42.
