Downpour dampens Slatington bike night

The rain may have washed away the crowd Saturday afternoon for Slatington's third annual Bike Night, but it did not dampen the spirits of the volunteers.

Roughly 40 volunteers came out to lend a hand for the Slatington Fire Company fundraiser. The event is held in the honor of 30-year firefighter Milton J. "Bup" Greene, who passed away in 2012. Greene was heavily involved with the fire company and helped to run the carnival every year.Greene belonged to the Teamster Horsemen Motorcycle Association 53 North, which also help to organize and staff the event. Along with the fire company and Teamsters the event was sponsored by many associations such as the Slatington Legion and Williams Heating and Cooling.A few vendors braved the weather, including Moon Lite Beads and Stitchin' Witch, while Slatington's Main Street Diner along with Mama's Pizza held out as long as possible before the torrential rains washed away the last of the customers. All funds raised are returned to the fire company. The event included a Chinese auction, and basket raffle run by organizer and volunteer Sharon Forte.Forte, the wife of a Teamster Horsemen, said all proceeds are put toward the fire company and Teamster Association."It's for a great cause. Last year was amazing, next year will be amazing. It's just a shame Mother Nature didn't hold out for us," she said.Lehigh Valley AC/DC tribute band CA/CD braved the downpour to bring all the hits to the umbrella-covered audience."As a Lehigh Valley band we are used to playing in these conditions," frontman Bryan "Alf" Shumway told everyone. The event will be held again next year but the date has not yet been decided.
