Slatington man sentenced on heroin dealing charge
A Slatington man was sentenced to a county jail term on Monday morning on a drug dealing charge.
Michael Robert Reichard Jr., 41, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic to serve four to one day less two years on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-heroin. The prison term will be followed by three years of probation. Reichard previously pleaded to the charge.Reichard was arrested by agents of the state Attorney General's office after he sold heroin to an undercover agent. The sale occurred in the area of 117 Delaware Ave. in Palmerton.Reichard said he became addicted to painkillers, specifically Percocet, after suffering a neck injury while wrestling in college. He said the addiction led to heroin.Nanovic noted Reichard made two sales to an undercover agent but his plea agreement was for one sale.Reichard spent nine days in a detox program and two days in a inpatient program before leaving. He claimed that the inpatient rehab center was not helping. Nanovic countered, and said two days is not enough time to know that.Reichard said he is fighting his heroin addiction on his own, something also Nanovic took issue with. The judge said heroin is one of, if not the most, addictive drugs now used by addicts and one that experts say can't be defeated without professional help.Defense Attorney Gregory Lee Mousseau said Reichard is trying on his own adding, "There are people who can say enough is enough."Nanovic again urged Reichard to consider inpatient treatment.Nanovic also ordered him to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment.Nanovic added, "If the recommendation is inpatient treatment, you must do that."He also must supply a DNA sample, zero tolerance imposed on drug use, pay court costs, and a $50 per month supervision fee when released on parole. He will begin the jail term at 10 a.m. on Aug. 17.
