Schuylkill CARES Act funds to be awarded soon

Schuylkill County entities that applied for and received money from CARES Act funds should see the money shortly.

“It is going to be very soon,” Finance Director Paul Buber said Wednesday.

Buber declined to provide a time frame. So far, 24 nonprofits, 30 small businesses and 21 municipalities are receiving funds, he said, declining to name the recipients. The county received $12.6 million from the federal government to disburse.

However, additional applicants could receive funding. Buber said there are “two or three applicants that submitted their application prior to the additional deadline, however, they did not submit all required information, so there is some follow-up work occurring, which could have an impact on those numbers.”

Money must be spent by Dec. 31.

Municipalities could receive a maximum of $35,000 while small businesses and nonprofits that qualified were eligible for up to $30,000.

Mark Morgan, director of Susquehanna Accounting & Consulting Solutions Inc., said recently 22 municipal, 48 nonprofit and 47 for profit applications were received. The firm made the recommendations on awarding money after following applicable requirements. The commissioners had to concur, Morgan said, although identifying information was not provided.

Buber deferred additional comment to County Administrator Gary Bender, who previously said those applicants who met eligibility criteria would receive their payday soon.

“It was a very difficult program. We are preparing for getting contracts and getting signatures,” he said.

Bender said he had no comment when asked if the names of the applicants who applied for funding but were not approved would be provided.

During the public comment period of Wednesday’s weekly meeting, Commissioners’ Chairman Barron “Boots” Hetherington read a comment from Douglas Litwhiler, a member of Ringtown Borough council, who thanked the government for the money Ringtown is approved for. An amount was not mentioned.
