The Pennsylvania State Police have initiated an effort to be more involved in their communities.
On Monday night, Cpl. Shawn Noonan from Troop N, Lehighton barracks, dropped in at the Polk Township supervisors meeting to talk with community members and the supervisors about any problems, concerns or issues they might have.
“We have always had a good relationship with the supervisors, fire department and the zoning officers, but we also want to hear from the township members in the community to know how we can better serve them,” he said.
Noonan also spoke about the different outreach programs the state police offer and mentioned the child safety seat check as one of the most important programs.
“We all know child safety seats saves lives,” he said, and added, “If anyone knows someone who has just had a child, advise them to have the seat installed by a professional.”
The state police also have a drug takeback box in their lobby and the door is open 24 hours.
“We don’t ask for identification when you drop off the drugs. No questions are asked,” he said.
Once COVID-19 restrictions are removed, Noonan said the barracks will go back to hosting tours for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and other civic organizations.
Police staff can educate parents about drugs and what parents need to look for.
“We really want to be involved in the community and we want to be aware of any concerns and any problems in your community,” Noonan said.
