Parryville appoints new council member; another resigns seat

Parryville Borough Mayor Tom Kobal swore in newly appointed Councilman Jason Smith at the monthly meeting of the borough council. Smith was also unanimously elected to serve as vice president of the council, and the resignation of Councilwoman Penni Szoke was accepted effective Dec. 1.

Council has 30 days to fill the vacancy, and interested residents should visit the borough’s website for more information.

The annual budget meeting will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 29.

Smith is investigating electronics recycling options to determine if the “fees can be covered by the borough or by the residents.” More information will be available at the next meeting.

The board approved authorization to apply for state grant funds to support the creation of a shared fire company, borough hall and emergency shelter. This complex would replace the current structures located in Parryville.

The Zoning and Building Code committee will visit 46 cited properties on Friday, beginning at 9 a.m.

According to solicitor Robert Frycklund, those not complying with zoning citations will be handled by “the required legal process.”

The annual Christmas tree ceremony will be held on Dec. 5. Events will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the lighting will be around 6 p.m. Hot chocolate and coffee will be served. Fire company events for December include Breakfast with Santa from 8 a.m. to noon on Dec. 5, with Santa arriving at 9 a.m., and a Christmas party on Dec. 11 from 6-9 p.m. Participants should bring a $20 Secret Santa gift. All programming is subject to change depending on COVID-19 related closures and restrictions.
