It's getting tough to find companies willing to buy recyclables.
Schuylkill County had only one company, Mahantango Enterprises of Liverpool, Perry County, bid on the contract to buy used tires to be collected during the county's annual fall cleanup.The company bid $70 a ton to recycle all of the tires collected. Commissioners did not immediately act on the bid.The fall cleanup, which collects tires, electronics, appliances and scrap metal, and runs from Sept. 14 through Sept. 26 in 13 towns, including the Tamaqua Transfer station in Tamaqua.In other matters Thursday, commissioners:• Reappointed three people to the Drug & Alcohol Advisory Board for three-year terms, from July 1 through June 30, 2018. They are Sheriff Joseph Groody, Pottsville; Melissa Carr, Auburn; and Joe Szeliga of the Adult Probation Office.• Approved a contract with David M. Pastucka to provide psychological evaluations and Act 235 testing for employees of the Adult Probation Department at $175 per evaluation/testing. The contract is from July 7 through July 7, 2018. The testing is required in order to clear the employees to carry firearms.• Approved a 2015-2016 grant-in-aid application to the state Board of Probation and Parole. The grant period began July 1 and ends June 30, 2016. The county probation department is asking for the state funds to reimburse 17 salaries of probation officers. The application requires the signatures of the commissioners, president judge and chief probation officer.
