Schuylkill Township's approved budget for 2015 keeps the tax rate at 10.22 mills, with revenues of $442,685 and expenditures of $442,315. The budget was approved by all three supervisors.
Supervisor Christine Verdier announced that the Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission board has chosen a new director, John Mirarchi of Shamokin. Verdier said the board had 10 applicants for the position and interviewed five. Mirarchi's first introduction to the area will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, when he attends the Tamaqua Salvation Army's breakfast with Santa Claus. The supervisors said they have received several applicants for both the township secretary/treasurer position and cleaning service position, and will begin setting up interviews. Township resident Suzanne Apanavage has been serving as temporary secretary/treasurer since the passing of Mary Liz Bubel in October. Bubel served as secretary/treasurer for 17 years. During the meeting, Chairman Charles Hosler showed attendees the plaque that the township made in honor of her service, and he said it will hang in the hallway outside the secretary's office.Hosler said that there are 50 garbage customers in the township with past due bills. A list of the delinquent customers has been sent to Kreizer Sanitation, which holds the township's garbage contract, and the company will no longer pick up garbage from those customers.
