Controlled county spending, holding the line on taxes and the lack of a full state budget are a few challenges that the board of Carbon County commissioners will face in 2016.

During the annual swearing-in ceremony Monday morning in the Carbon County Courthouse, Republican Commissioner incumbents Wayne Nothstein and Thomas J. Gerhard, and Democratic incumbent William O'Gurek were sworn into office for four-year terms.Nothstein was accompanied by his wife, Donna; Gerhard was accompanied by his wife, Susie; and O'Gurek was accompanied by his wife, Siobhan, as they took their oaths in front of President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.Following their swearing-in, the commissioners addressed the filled courtroom.Nothstein thanked the voters for supporting him and his colleagues in the 2015 elections."It's an honor to serve the county with Tom and Bill for another four years," he said.He also thanked his family, the county departments, courts and everyone involved in county business for working hard to provide residents with quality government."It's a great day here in Carbon County," Gerhard said. "I am thankful, grateful and humbled to be standing here."He thanked Nothstein and O'Gurek, who have each served multiple terms, for their guidance during his first four years in office, and recognized the commissioners' office staff who make up the "backbone" of the office.O'Gurek, who won re-election in 2015 after being voted out in 2011 and appointed by Nanovic to fill the vacancy created by the departure of then Commissioner Charles Getz, said that he is "very blessed and appreciative of the voters" for their confidence in him and his colleagues to lead Carbon County for another term.He said that Monday marked a "new year and a new term" not just for the commissioners and row officers getting sworn in, but for everyone in county government."We have another opportunity to provide services to the residents," O'Gurek said.Monday afternoon, the commissioners held their reorganization meeting.Nothstein will again serve as the chairman of the board for the next four years, while Gerhard will again serve as the vice chairman.Also reappointed were attorney Daniel Miscavige, county solicitor; and Eloise Ahner, county administrator/chief clerk.
