Summit Hill takes out a $75,000 loan

Running low on funds, Summit Hill borough has taken out a $75,000 tax anticipation note.

The tax anticipation note is a one-year loan, but the intention is to repay it when tax revenue arrives within the next few months.It was reported the borough contacted six banks for rates, and only two responded.The council agreed to loan the money from Mauch Chunk Trust Company, which offered an annual interest rate of 1.25 percent. The other bank to give a quotation was Jim Thorpe National Bank which offered a 2.99 percent interest rate.In other business:The council approved 59 renewals for exemptions of garbage bill payments in 2012. Council President Michael Kokinda said there were 15 new applications for exemptions received. The council agreed to table the new applications until their validity can be substantiated.A borough resident complained that he walked down Stoney Lonesome Road on Saturday and saw several new piles of tires dumped there. He counted 80 tires in a 20-yard span.The council urged anyone seeing tires being dumped, or any type of suspicious activity, to notify police immediately.Khalid Chohan of West Ridge Street, Summit Hill, told the council he is interested in forming a Toastmasters Club in the borough. The council said it will consider a request by him to use the borough hall for a meeting room once a month after he submits a written proposal.A resident complained that members of a football team using Ginder Field are driving their vehicles on the field and track. He said the field is part of Summit Hill history and that oldtimers remember using it for high school football games and other events.John O'Gurek, vice president of the council, directed the police department to ticket any vehicle spotted on the field.Scott Bieber was appointed alternate Sewage Enforcement Officer for 2012.
