Schuylkill names Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week

The Schuylkill County Commissioners Wednesday proclaimed Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week.

Today is the 233 anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution by the Constitutional Convention.

The commissioners recognized the importance of the Constitution and asked citizens to “reaffirm the ideals the framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never be regained.”

Commissioner Barron “Boots” Hetherington read the proclamation given to Becky Matz, regent of the Mahantongo Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and Tish Malarkey, secretary of the local chapter based in Pottsville. The 56-member chapter meets monthly and encourages the public to gain more knowledge of the historical document.

“Thank you ladies for everything that you do,” Schuylkill County Commissioner George Halcovage said, a sentiment Commissioner Gary Hess echoed.
