April is Duck Month in Schuylkill County.
County commissioners, with the help of a bright yellow duck mascot, on Wednesday approved a resolution naming the special month. It's all for a good cause. On Sunday, April 27, Avenues, formerly United Cerebral Palsy, will hold its 26th Annual Duck Race on the banks of Mill Creek in St. Clair.Thousands of ducks will be available for "adoption" in order to be entered into the race. Donations from the adoptions will benefit children and adults who participate in programs offered by Avenues.Commissioner Gary J. Hess, whose late sister, Cynthia Ann, participated in Avenues and whose mother worked there, offered a few comments."My family was very touched by having Avenues. It is an organization that was founded to help families, a place to go where they wouldn't be put into an institution, where they were cared for just like anyone else," he said."We're very grateful to have them. I urge everyone to go out and adopt a duck or two," he said. For more information about the duck race, call 570-622-7920.
