Summit Hill church welcomes new pastor
Many high school students spend their free time worrying about their next athletic contest or who they'll ask to the homecoming dance.
Kari Anne Olson was mapping out her career plan.On Sunday, she made her plan a reality as she was installed as the newest pastor at Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church in Summit Hill."Summit Hill is such a great place to start my career and everyone was very eager to welcome me," Olson said during a quiet moment in the church about an hour before her installation. "They've been a waiting a while for a pastor and I've been preparing for this moment since high school. It feels like a long time coming for both of us."Olson came to Summit Hill on Aug. 1 after graduating from the Princeton Theological Seminary in May.The search for a new Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church pastor led the team to Princeton, where they interviewed several students, including Olson."I fell in love with the way the people of this church came alive when they talked about God," she said. "They have a real hope for the future. Hope is big around here. It's in the name of the church and you can really feel it in the air of this church."Olson may be a new pastor, but she doesn't show nerves during a sermon. Her affinity for public speaking was something she discovered at a young age and also signaled to her that a career at the pulpit may be for her."My youth group was large with probably 100-150 people," she recalled. "In high school, my director invited me to give the lesson. I felt more excited at proclaiming the good news then I was nervous at speaking in front of a large group of my peers."Still new in town, Olson hasn't set a lot of goals for her time at the 130-member church. She's fully intent, however, on gauging the community's needs and working to meet them."This congregation lights up at the sense of hope and if I do anything here," she said, "I hope I can give them a greater sense of hope."
