Bid is awarded for bridge work

Schuylkill County commissioners awarded a $535,596.26 bid Wednesday to Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction Company, Tamaqua, for the rehabilitation of county bridge 103 Old Mill Road over Catawissa Creek in East Union Township.

The company submitted the lowest bid among four bidders, county engineer Lisa Mahall said Wednesday.

“I anticipate they will be starting work in the early part of October,” Mahall said of the agreement the county approved.

The structurally deficient bridge dates back to 1927. Beams on the two-lane T beam concrete bridge are starting to deteriorate due to salt application. The weight-restricted bridge is 72 feet long and 24 feet wide. Dimensions on the bridge will remain the same.
