It won't be long before Palmerton begins to take on a look all its own.

For the entire month of October, the borough will be filtered with decorated straw men specimens as part of the fifth annual scarecrow contest.Sponsored by the Palmerton Area Chamber of Commerce, the event serves as a means to attract visitors to the borough in the autumn season, said event coordinator Joan Turko."As usual, businesses can decorate in a fashion that showcases their merchandise," Turko said. "Private homes have many options for scarecrow design."Turko said those who participate are urged to display a scarecrow in front of their business or in their storefront window next month.For residential display, Turko said an ideal location is the front of their homes.In the past, she noted that banks, schools, restaurants, doctors' offices, private residences and other businesses have participated in the event.Turko said those in need of a stand should contact Brian Billig at Palmerton Lumber Company to make arrangements.Anyone with questions about this year's scarecrow decorations should contact Turko at 610-826-2716, or at
