Concourse Club raises, donates nearly $8,000
The Concourse Club of Palmerton was recently in a giving mood.
Just ask the recipients who attended the Palmerton Area Library to accept donations from the club courtesy of its annual Spring Basket Spectacular.Held in April at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmerton, the event netted the club just under $8,000, according to Marie Williams, co-chair of the club's Ways and Means Committee."We worked hard through it, but so did everybody else work hard to make this money to give to you," Williams said. "We hope to do just as good next year as we did this year."Lisa Snell Kern, president of the organization, noted the contributions made by members of the group."We have 130 ladies who are committed to service, and in this day and age, that's not easy to do," Snell Kern said. Each year the club disperses profits from the event to Palmerton area organizations and fire companies.Among the organizations who received money from the Concourse Club include the Palmerton Area Library; Palmerton Memorial Park; Domestic Violence; Palmerton Historical Society; Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches; Palmerton Municipal Fire Company; West End Fire Company; Aquashicola Fire Company; Bowmanstown Fire Company; Towamensing Fire Company; Palmerton Area Recreation Committee; Palmerton Band; Sacred Heart Catholic Church's St. Vincent dePaul Society; Carbon County Special Olympics; Breast Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Coalition; Palmerton Bandstand Committee; Meals on Wheels; Care Net of Carbon County; Family Promise of Carbon County; and Friends of the Park.Formed in 1915, the club commemorated its centennial with a 100th anniversary dinner at Blue Mountain Resort earlier this month.Since 1989, club-led improvements to the borough park total $255,124. Past projects include the renovation of the bandstand and its landscaping, benches and pathways; adding vintage lights, a security camera and tree plantings; and the annual Summer Concerts in the Park. The organization is made up of women who are dedicated to public service. The club meets from October through May on the first Thursday of the month.
