Holiday help

The Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St., will be accepting registrations for families in need of a little holiday help this year. This includes holiday food baskets, Toys for Tots and an Angel Tree.Dates to register will be Oct. 20, 21 and 22 only, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.Proper identification and proof of need are required. Registrants MUST provide proof of residence, such as a utility bill; Social Security cards for every household member; proof of all household income, which includes employment/wages, public assistance, food stamps, Social Security/SSI, and any other type of income; official birth certificates for anyone under the age of 12; expenses, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, medical, etc.; and a working phone number.Thanksgiving food baskets will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 23. Christmas food baskets, angel tree and toy distribution will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 17.For more information on any Salvation Army program, call 570-668-0410.Garden clubThe Lewistown valley Garden Club met Sept. 22 with Elizabeth Leiby of Leiby Farms as the guest speaker.The Leiby farm is located in the Lewistown Valley. The family has a produce stand on Catawissa Road. The farm features agricultural tunnels for growing certain crops, allowing for an extended growing season while offering protection from the weather and wild animals. Leiby explained how the tunnels work and provided colorful samples of some of the crops she grows.Lunch was served by Helen Miller and Mary Bridygham. Arrangement winners were Carol Kohn, Mary Bridygham and June Leiby.The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 and will be the annual dinner meeting. Anyone interested in attending may call Kathy McGee.St. Peter's UnionThis Sunday's 9 a.m. service in St. Peter's Union Church in Mantzville will include a presentation on the organ donor program. Sunday school will be held at 10:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, Daisies, Brownies, Junior, Cadet and Cub Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.Next week's activities include: Monday, church board meets at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Women of St. Peter's meets at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, apple dumpling pickup from noon to 5 p.m., Confirmation class meets at 6 p.m., cherub choir meets at 6:30 p.m., junior choir rehearses at 7 p.m., senior choir practices at 7:30 p.m.The Thrivent Member Appreciation Dinner will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 24.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley.
