The audience cheered and clapped as Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday honored a Pine Grove Area High School student as the county's 2015 scholar-athlete.
The commissioners' regular public meeting was moved to the high school in order to recognize the student, Scott Werner.Commissioners presented him with a plaque.Scott, the son of Beth and Richard Werner, is vice president of the Class of 2015, and is regional president of the Future Business Leaders of America.An outstanding football player, Werner last month won the Schuylkill Chapter No. 25 of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award.He plans to attend Lebanon Valley College.In other matters, commissioners hired four full-time correctional officers.Kyleigh Rauenzahn, Schuylkill Haven; Kyle Fehr, Pottsville; Jeffry Yurkiewicz, Ringtown; and Zachary Broomell, Mahanoy City, will each earn $17.51 an hour.Fehr, Yurkiewicz and Broomell start Monday; Rauenzahn starts June 22.In other matters, commissioners authorized the modification to West Penn Township's 2012 Community Development Block Grant program.The township will cancel a planned demolition project and will add funds to an Americans with Disabilities Act project.Commissioners also approved a modification to Schuylkill Township's 2012 CDBG program canceling its fire station handicap barrier removal project and moving the funds.
