Lehighton police have charged a borough man with assaulting his roommate with a baseball bat.
Thomas A. Weiss, 51, of S. East Alley, Lehighton, is facing charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment and criminal mischief after Lehighton police were called to his apartment at 8:28 p.m. Aug. 12.
He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek of Lansford and released on bail (10 percent of $25,000 bail), pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Aug. 26 before the magistrate.
Police said the victim told them that he was in his apartment when his roommate (Weiss) started screaming at him for taking $100 from him.
The roommate told police he denied taking the money and Weiss started swinging the bat at him, striking him in the arm and elbow. The victim said Weiss also started smashing his personal property.
Moyer said he managed to get out of his bedroom and ran to a friend’s house at 108 Iron St. Weiss followed him there, pounding on the door before they opened the door so that the door would not be damaged.
The friend said Weiss went after the victim again, striking him several times. She said the victim was hit at the bridge of his nose and on the left side of his torso. The assault ended only when another person entered the apartment and stopped the offender from hitting the victim.
Police said the victim was transported from the police station to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
