Weatherly plans addition to building for fire department, police
Weatherly moved into its new borough offices last month, and are moving forward with plans to add an addition on for the fire department and police.
On Tuesday, the Carbon County Planning Commission recommended plan approval for the borough’s plan to construct a 6,000-square-foot addition to the existing borough building. The addition will house the future Weatherly Borough Fire House, a police garage and storage facility. It will also include a total of 53 parking spaces and a 30-by-40-foot compound yard.
Ivan O. Meixell Jr., county planner, said the borough is also requesting a waiver for the zoning ordinance that requires 62 off-street parking spaces.
Meixell recommended that commission recommend approval of the waiver.
The newly completed $2 million complex includes a municipal building, police station and magistrate’s office.
The project was first proposed six years ago and included a garage for the police, but after initial bids came in over budget, the project was downsized and the garage eliminated.
Last year, police Chief Brian Markovchick told council that the downsized building did not function properly for the police because the department needed to secure evidence and a garage for the police cruisers.
Other matters
The Carbon County Planning Commission also made recommendations on the following plans:
• Richard D. and Patricia A. Beltz received conditional plan approval for a proposed lot line revision at the intersection of Eliot and Hugh’s Lane, Towamensing Trails, section 3, Penn Forest Township. The plans call for combining two parcels into one lot.
• James J. and Jean Marie Secara received conditional plan rejection for a proposed subdivision at 630 Beaver Run Drive, Mahoning Township. The plans call for creating two lots from one lot.
