Christmas event lights up Palmerton park
All it took was one mere flick of the switch for downtown Palmerton to sparkle like never before.
From Christmas carols to wagon rides and 68 beautifully lit trees, the second annual Christmas in the Park in Palmerton glistened with holiday spirit.Sponsored by the Aquashicola and Palmerton fire departments, as well as the Palmerton Pool Pals, the event was held Sunday in the borough park."It's another beautiful day in Palmerton," Mayor Chris Olivia said as he welcomed visitors to the event. "There's no better place to be today than in the Palmerton Borough Park celebrating the second annual Christmas in the Park."Olivia then thanked each of the members of the Palmerton Holiday Lighting Committee. The Palmerton Booster Club was well-represented at the event. In all, the organization donated 22 trees and sponsored four, according to Brandy Kresge, an assistant coach."It's nice that they (the kids) get to come down and see the trees and can bring their families down," Kresge said.Jennifer Platts, a head coach, said, "it's nice they can feel a part of it."Across the park, Amanda Bonini of Palmerton and her two daughters, Aniya, 11, and Ariana, 6, had the right idea as they sipped on some hot chocolate."We love our town, and we love to be a part of the festivities that they hold," Amanda said.Aniya said she was glad to have her hot chocolate."It's good," Aniya said. "It's keeping me warm."Despite chilly temperatures and a change in day, Christmas in the Park Committee Chairwoman Michele O' Neill said the event was able to go off without a hitch."I think everything went well even with the rain causing a delay," O'Neill said. "Our entertainment brought the spirit of Christmas to life."Live music was performed by the S.S. Palmer Children's Chorus, Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches' Community Christmas Caroling, Holiday Homecoming Chorus, Strolling Bass Quintet, and the Resurrection Ringers and Jr. Chimers from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Palmerton.O'Neill was also quick to praise the food and craft vendors, horse-drawn wagon rides, pictures with Olaf, and naturally, Santa."The vendors helped keep us warm with their tasty treats, and our craft vendors helped with our holiday shopping," she said. "Santa had a huge turnout, and Olaf was well-loved and received some of the cutest hugs a snowman ever received."Children who visited Santa received a goody bag and were entered into a drawing for a chance at a 2015 membership to the Palmerton Memorial Pool, a Toys R Us gift card, or one of four bikes donated by George's Plumbing & Heating of Palmerton. However, nothing could top the actual lighting of the trees, conducted by Olivia.O'Neill said the trees were decorated/adopted by Palmerton and Lehighton community members."What a beautiful night for Palmerton," she said.O'Neill said after the event that she hopes visitors are able to take a moment to walk through park, "especially in the evening to enjoy its magical wonder.""The park is alive with the Christmas spirit," she said. "Some call it a hallmark event, I call it a Palmerton event because it's the people of Palmerton that make this day what it is."The trees will be lit until Jan. 7. Cleanup of the trees is Jan. 10. The committee will dispose of the tree and the tree stand.Christmas in the Park debuted last year in the borough and featured 48 decorated trees from members of the community.
