Nesquehoning woman sentenced
A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday after previously pleading guilty to a drug charge.
Bethann Marie Neff, 26, of Nesquehoning, was sentenced to serve five to one day less 24 months in prison on a charge of possession of a controlled substance-alprazolam.However, Neff won't being serving any jail term after she successfully completed an inpatient drug rehab program run by the Salvation Army in Harrisburg. She spent six and a half months in the program.Neff told Judge Joseph J. Matika how the program helped her. "It definitely changed my life. I work, I got my family back. It's such a good place. I recommend it to anyone."Matika said it was obvious to the court the program helped her. "Undoubtedly you're a new person."Matika said drug addiction is something a person must fight every day and said the Salvation Army gives people the tools to fight it, but it is still up to each person to use those tools.Matika gave her credit for 293 days spent in the rehab program, which also included 90 days she spent in prison before entering the program, and she was immediately paroled.Matika ordered her to continue her counseling, zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use, render 50 hours of community service, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole, and pay court costs of about $1,000.She was arrested on the charge at the county prison, where she was being held on other charges. Nesquehoning police were called to the prison on July 11, 2013, by corrections officers. The police report stated various correctional officers noticed that a number of female inmates appeared to be under the influence of what they believed to be some sort of narcotic. As a result, a random cellblock raid was conducted and any inmate showing signs of being under the influence was screened for drugs.Three other women were arrested along with Neff at the time. All tested positive for alprazolam, a narcotic. One of the female inmates later admitted smuggling the drug into the prison and giving it to the others.
