A company in Pottsville and one in Jim Thorpe engaged in price gouging consumers, Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Monday.
American Surgical Supply of Pottsville, and Keystone Medical Equipment of Jim Thorpe, sold N95 face masks at high prices, according to a statement.
The Office of Attorney General entered into an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance with the companies after the office received tips “alleging the stores were selling N95 masks for unlawful prices. The office learned that Keystone sold 122 face masks for upwards of $28 per mask, and that American Surgical sold 485 masks for as much as $26 per mask,” according to the statement.
Those who bought the masks from the companies may be eligible for restitution.
An increase more than 20 percent during a declared state of emergency is considered price gouging, according to the Price Gouging Act.
“Consumers have the right to pay a fair price for goods, especially those as essential masks during this pandemic. Ripping people off to make a buck during this pandemic isn’t only unacceptable - it’s illegal. Whenever price gouging happens, we will act to stop it and get people their money back, Shapiro said.
