Lehighton plans to enforce the state fireworks law to address the issue of fireworks being set off in the borough.
The borough recently posted on its website that it would like to remind all residents of the fireworks law in Pennsylvania.
“At this time, the Lehighton Borough Police Department will be enforcing the PA State Law,” the post says. “However, Lehighton Borough Council will be addressing, at upcoming council meetings, possible changes to our local ordinances to more clearly define fireworks laws within our municipality.”
Specifically, the post draws special attention to consumer fireworks within 150 feet of an occupied structure.
The post comes several weeks after a petition signed by residents distraught with hearing the sound of fireworks in the borough began to be circulated.
According to resident Annette Tenisci, who started the appeal, the noise began on June 5, and hasn’t stopped since.
Tenisci said the fireworks continued on June 6 in the Housing Authority parking lot, and added they have been set off at First and Bankway streets as well.
She said a copy of the petition has been presented to the borough police department along with Carbon County Commissioners.
Tenisci previously said she believes there were close to 50 signatures on the petition, adding “it sort of took on a life of its own.”
She said she plans to present the petition at the next meeting of borough council, scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.
Lehighton isn’t the only local community that’s had to deal with fireworks.
