Vandals hit PV school, field
Panther Valley Middle School and an adjacent youth soccer field just off Route 209 between Nesquehoning and Lansford were vandalized over the weekend.
Members of the Panther Valley Youth Soccer Association arrived at the field, located just up the hill from the school, on Saturday morning to find garbage cans and portable toilets toppled over.According to Jim Miller, vice president of the association, vandals also tried to use a bench to break through the door of a shed used to store snacks and drinks for the athletes.Seven classroom windows on the lower level of the middle school were smashed and glass was busted out of an access door, according to Panther Valley Superintendent Dennis Kergick.School officials were on site Saturday for cleanup."We don't know how much damage was done from a monetary standpoint," he said Monday. "We have someone coming today to look at it."The district does have security cameras outside of the building."It's deeply discouraging, but vandalism has happened here several years ago and it's not uncommon," Kergick said. "We are working on additional measures to prevent this in the future; however, I don't want to give those away."It's also not the first time the soccer fields have been vandalized."We had a past break-in around a year ago and we lost everything out of our small shed," Miller said."Thankfully this time we didn't lose anything. After the last break-in, we bought a larger, $3,500 shed with donations and fundraiser money. It worked and they weren't able to get in this time."Summit Hill police are investigating the incident.According to Miller, a dirt bike rider in full gear has been seen around the school on several occasions."In talking with some people there, they have a feeling that person may be involved, but you can never get a good look because they're in full gear," he said. The school has reportedly been the target of vandalism on several recent occasions."It's a shame," Miller said. "We had to raise money for a larger shed and now we're starting a fund drive to purchase a camera. It's what we have to do if this keeps up."On the youth soccer association Facebook page, posters expressed outrage over the incident."There are cameras outside of the middle school," said Amy Beers Collins. "Hopefully they were working and in the right places. This is horrible."Diana Walls said the vandals had, "no respect for anyone or anything."
