Members of the Jim Thorpe Area High School Class of 1964 meet regularly for lunch and other events.
During the May get-together, the group honored several of those within their membership who have performed distinctively in the public service of their community.• Donald Hayes, a 1993 graduate, is a member of the police department for the City of Baltimore, Maryland. He was presented with the group's highest honor and a special certificate of recognition. Hayes began his career in 1996 as a Kidder Township patrolman, gaining valuable experience during a 5½-year stint as a member of the Carbon/Schuylkill Drug Task Force. In 2001, he moved to Baltimore, where he worked his way into the Violent Crime Impact Section. He is current with Homeland Security and is assigned as a K-9 handler.• Awarded the same honors as Hayes was Ronald Hydro of Jim Thorpe who has served with the Pennsylvania State Police for almost 30 years, first serving with the Mounted State Police and as a member of a rodeo team. He spoke to the group about his days as a rodeo entertainer. In high school, Hydro was a member of the team that won the state basketball championship in 1962 and was also a pitcher on the baseball team.• Bill Diehm, current fire chief in Jim Thorpe, was also honored. Diehm is usually busy in borough affairs as well as tasks around the county. He's served an important role in the fire department for decades, beginning as a teen volunteer.• The group also saluted and expressed its support for military veterans.
