Dimmick hosts inspiration art contest

Dimmick Memorial Library in Jim Thorpe is hosting an Inspiration in Isolation art contest during the pandemic.

The event began last month as a way for people to express their artistic talents during this strange time.

Everyone is invited to share that artwork.

Until July 12, Dimmick is accepting entries for the contest. The winning pieces will be professionally framed and displayed in the library.

To enter, email the library a piece of original artwork. It can be a painting, photograph, drawing or digital art.

Artists will be grouped into two categories: under age 16 and over age 16. There will be a winner in each category.

Finalists will be displayed on the library’s website and Facebook page between July 13 and 20. Voting by the community will take place during this time period. Winners will then be announced on July 27.

To submit a piece of artwork, email a clear, high-resolution photo to dimmickevents@gmail.com before July 12.

The contest is open to any resident of Carbon County who is not currently an established artist.

Other events at the library

In addition to the art contest, Dimmick is still offering a variety of activities.

• Carbon County Sheltered Stories project: The library, in addition to Lehighton Area Memorial and Palmerton libraries, is still collecting stories from Carbon County residents about their thoughts, feelings and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Submissions can be written, videos or audio and will help the libraries create a resource for future generations.

For more information on the project or how to submit a story, visit www.shelteredstories.org.

• Fairy Garden Crafting: A virtual event will take place at 4 p.m. on June 24 via Zoom. The library will show participants how to upcycle plastic bottles into cute fairy garden houses. A list of materials can be found at the event page on the library’s Facebook page.
