Blast from the past Mahoning Drive-In brings classic films back to the big screen
Classics are making a comeback, and not just in fashion.
The retro trend is breathing new life into the Mahoning Drive-In Theater, where nostalgia reigns supreme over digital DVDs.Everything at the drive-in is original, the projectors, the marquee, right down to the 1940s popcorn machine."Our concession prices are absolutely unmatched at any theater," manager Virgil Cardamone said. Why the hold on to the old 35 millimeter film?Head projectionist and current owner Jeff Mattox decided he "didn't want to show what everyone else was running." Mattox decided to utilize the original 1948 equipment, saying, "Old films, old drive-in, it just fits. Its classic nostalgia to its fullest.""This is the way movies are meant to be seen, in a tangible way," Cardamone said. But 35 mm film is not cheap or easy to find. The films have to come directly from the studio or private collectors. Shipping and licensing of the movies is costly, but both Mattox and Cardamone believe in the expense. The exclusivity of the shows is one of the attracting forces for new audiences who weren't born when the 35 mm films were originally on the big screen. The enthusiasm felt by Mattox and Cardamone is shared by the drive-in patrons. The social media pages are filled with satisfied comments."It is a great time and the food is great as well, really good, reasonable prices and good sound quality," Matt Bennett of Levittown wrote in his Facebook review.Last week's movie feature was a "Planet of the Apes" marathon. Mahoning Drive-In Theater partnered with Exhumed Films out of Philadelphia for this event. This is just one of many events that will be held at the drive-in this summer. An upcoming Biker Movie Night at the drive-in is set for the same weekend as Bike Night in Franklin Township."We have lots of events planned. Music fest, biker weekend, camping horror weekend, car show weekend," Cardamone said. The goal is to raise enough money to update the outdated marquee that can be seen from the entrance on Route 443.The ticket cost is $10 for adults, $7 for kids and $10 for movie marathon events.
