Carbon woman pleads to drug count, gets prison term

A Carbon County woman pleaded guilty on Monday in the county court to a drug charge and was sentenced to a county jail term.

Melissa Ann Tessitore, 38, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine, and a summary offense of driving under suspension.Tessitore was arrested on Feb. 26 by Franklin Township police following a traffic stop. Police were dispatched to Route 2015 for a report of drug activity. Police spotted a vehicle in the area and made a stop. Found in the car was a bag of meth.Tessitore asked Nanovic to place her on probation, stating she had mental health issues in the past but is now off her medications.Nanovic rejected the request, noting that Tessitore has a prior conviction for possession and is considered a repeat offender under state sentencing guidelines.Nanovic sentenced her to serve three to 12 months in the county prison followed by two years of probation.Tessitore asked if she could serve the time on consecutive weekends because she is currently enrolled in a vocation school and has one more semester to complete. Nanovic agreed, but told her serving consecutive weekends will stretch out the term for a year.In addition to the jail term Nanovic ordered Tessitore to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation. On the suspension charge she was ordered to pay a fine of $200.She will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. Aug. 7 and serve it on consecutive three-day weekends until it is completed.
