Court appointment needed to fill vacancy
At Weissport's bimonthly meeting on Monday, borough solicitor Michael Greek provided correspondence of a hearing scheduled Aug. 17 in the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas to appoint Linda Schoenberger to the vacant council seat. This vacancy was created by the sudden resignation of former Vice President Susan Pywar.
Since council waited beyond the 30-day period and there was no vacancy board named at their 2015 reorganization meeting, a court appointment is required. This appointment will occur in time for the Aug. 17 meeting.Trail projectIn addition, present at Monday's meeting were representatives of the Delaware & LehighNational Heritage Corridor. Scott Everett provided information on two projects that will affect Weissport, as well as several other communities in Carbon County.Garofalo briefly touched on the Jim Thorpe Pedestrian Bridge Project. This will affect Weissport as municipal member of the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission.Garofalo said, "There is no financial impact to the borough. All grants are in place and the project should be ready to go out for bid March of 2016. The only issue where the borough would need to act is passing of a resolution due to the fact that the bridge will be put in place on property owned by the Canal Recreation Commission. This should occur in the next month of so."The affected municipalities will be invited to a site meeting to view the area of the pedestrian bridge.Everett was on hand to review a project that will connect the Weissport Trail Head to the southern tier of the trail system."With this project, there is no monetary support required by the borough, however we are looking for some assistance with sign placement," Everett said. This project is a "Share the Road" project where bike lanes will be placed on Bridge Street from the Weissport Trailhead to the connection of the trail behind Castle Grill at the intersection of Bridge Street and Route 209.While council did not take any formal action, all members present expressed support of the assistance with sign placement. In other discussions, secretary Jillyan Sterling reported, "Messages have been left with PennDOT and Rep.
