Woman charged in drug death of Chestnuthill man in 2018

A Crawford County woman has been charged in the death of a Chestnuthill Township man who died nearly two years ago of a heroin overdose.

On Monday, charges were filed by the Monroe County Office of the District Attorney, and a warrant was issued for the arrest of Hillary James, 27, who is currently incarcerated in a state correctional facility for an unrelated crime.

It is alleged that James is responsible for the death of Cody Heller, who died on May 27, 2018, of a heroin overdose. At the time of his death, Heller was 24 years old.

After a two-year investigation, Detective Kim Lippincott of the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division, was able to obtain evidence which shows that James was responsible for Heller’s death.

The investigation revealed that James traveled to Heller’s residence on Legion Drive in Chestnuthill Township in the early morning hours of May 27, 2018.

Before going to meet Heller, James had gone to Paterson, New Jersey, where she and a friend had purchased a large quantity of heroin. After returning to Monroe County, Heller met with James, where he obtained the lethal dose which ultimately led to his death.

James has been charged with drug delivery resulting in death, a first-degree felony, both as a principal and as an accomplice; possession with intent to deliver heroin; and criminal use of a communication facility (a cellphone).

A warrant has been issued for James by District Judge Kristina Anzini of Stroudsburg. James will be transferred to the Monroe County Correctional Facility at a later date where she will answer to these charges.
