Montgomery County man gets jail for ticket booth break-in
A Montgomery County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Wednesday in Carbon County court after admitting his part into a burglary at a railroad ticket booth in Jim Thorpe that occurred in 2013.
Neil J. Young, 32, of Plymouth Meeting, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in the county prison on a charge of criminal conspiracy-burglary. The same term was imposed on a charge of theft, with the terms running concurrently. The jail term will be followed by three years probation.Young escaped a state prison term by a day when Serfass granted the request of Young's public defender, attorney Gregory Lee Mousseau, to keep his client in the county facility.Mousseau argued that Young cooperated with authorities immediately upon his arrest by borough police. He also was willing to testify against his co-defendants in the case.Mousseau said Young has had a long fight with drug addiction and is getting help while in prison. Young is currently an inmate in the Monroe County prison in Snydersville due to a prisoner exchange between Carbon and Monroe officials.Young told Serfass, "It was a stupid idea. I was high at the time." He said his part of the money taken in the burglary was used to buy drugs.Serfass said, "It does appear your addiction led you down a bad path." But Serfass warned Young that he will be under court supervision for about four years and must not get into any more problems, or he would be brought back and face the possibility of being resentenced to a state prison term.By imposing the one day less sentence, Serfass spared Young going to a state prison. He was also ordered to supply a DNA sample, get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation and parole, and render a total of 300 hours of community service during the length of his sentence. He must also make restitution to the railroad company for $2,121.50, which is his share of the total amount due.He was given credit for 307 days already spent in prison on the charges. One of fourYoung is one of four arrested for the entry to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway/Reading Northern Railroad ticket booth along Lehigh Avenue in Jim Thorpe. The booth is located next to the train station. The incident occurred on Nov. 29, 2013.The other defendants that were charged in the case are Andrew Gilchrist, 33, of Schwenksville; and Stephanie Marie Thompson, 29, and Rachael Lynn Thompson, 25, both of Royersford, all of Montgomery County.Gilchrist pleaded guilty in the case on April 14 and was sentenced to serve 15 to 30 months in a state correctional institution by Serfass. The two Thompsons were charged with criminal conspiracy-receiving stolen property. However, on April 24 the charges against the two were dismissed by the commonwealth. The four were charged with removing cash, portable radios and causing damages to the ticket booth.
