Thirty residents of Monroe County attended a Crime Watch meeting this week at Chestnuthill Park.

Todd Hoover, a district manager for U.S. Law Shield of Pennsylvania, presented a seminar explaining gun laws.U.S. Law Shield of Pennsylvania, a Texas-based organization, consists of an executive team of professionals including seasoned attorneys in civil and criminal trial experience, a business administrator, member services, a staff attorney and adviser, customer service, and national sales.A former state trooper, Hoover said people are fearful when there is an intruder on their property, but they should proceed with caution.Tracy Reda, a Polk Township resident, said she was asleep when someone attempted to break in to her home last month."This person had no fear," she said. "There were lights on and multiple cars in our driveway."Hoover said people have a critical choice as soon as they make the decision to use a gun."Is it absolutely necessary or is there a more sensible way to resolve the matter?" Hoover asked.In other words, "What would a reasonable person do?"People attending asked if they could use a gun against someone who breaks into their home who isn't armed, if they can defend someone who is unable to defend themselves and what to do if they see someone breaking into a neighbor's home.In a case like this, Hoover suggested calling the neighbor and letting them know what's going on. Next, call 911."Sometimes being a witness can be just as powerful as a gun," Hoover told them.Pennsylvania has tougher gun laws in relation to much of the country. "These laws are changing all the time," Hoover said.In Pennsylvania, people may wear open firearms but must first obtain a license to carry firearms permit through the county office and must be 21 or older.Hoover also said that people who travel out of state have to be educated about the laws in that state.For instance, a permit may be needed to take your gun to a different state.The Crime Watch West End group interacts with one another to be the eyes and ears for the police.For information, see their Facebook page: Crime Watch West End Monroe County Pa.
