An elderly Monroe County woman, the victim of a robbery, refused to let her assailants get away and rammed her vehicle into the suspects’ vehicle, which eventually let to their arrest.

Pocono Mountain Regional police said the incident began about 3:34 p.m. on Tuesday when officers were dispatched to the area of Knob Road in Mount Pocono. Police learned an 81-year-old woman was in the parking lot near the five points intersection when she was asked by another woman for $10 to put fuel in her car. The elderly woman gave the female a $20 bill because she did not have a $10 bill.As the elderly woman left the parking area she was followed by a small red car to Knob Road, where the elderly woman parked. A man and woman in their 20s grabbed the elderly woman’s purse from her as she was seated in her car.As the couple started to run away, the woman rammed her car into the suspects’ vehicle, damaging both cars. She continued to follow the suspects and saw them throw her purse out of their vehicle along Knob Road.Police found the damaged vehicle and took the occupants in the vehicle into custody.They were identified as William Hayhurst, 34, of Swiftwater, and Erin Vanmatte, 30, of Cresco.They were charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, tampering with physical evidence and criminal conspiracy.A third person in the vehicle, James Castellano, 34, of Pocono Summit, was arrested on an outstanding warrant by the county sheriff’s office and taken to the county prison in Snydersville.Hayhurst and Vanmatte were arraigned before a district judge. Records indicate Hayhurst is an inmate in the county prison. No information was listed for Vanmatte.
