Carbon County officials are hoping to secure nearly $500,000 to reconstruct the access road to service the proposed multipurpose training facility in Nesquehoning. The whole project has an estimated price tag of $10 million.

Last month, the commissioners voted to authorize the submission of a $498,000 Multimodal Grant application to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The county would have to pay a $185,001 match if successful in securing the grant. The county has already applied for three grants, totaling $2.8 million, but has not received notice that any have been awarded for the project.The project, if it becomes a reality, would benefit Carbon County fire departments, EMS services, police and county departments because emergency responders would not have to travel out of county for training purposes.The new site, located on 12 acres of land around the current Emergency Management Agency, would provide emergency services with a 46-foot high training tower and other practice sites. The center will have various classrooms, a 90-100 seat lecture hall, storage for Carbon County Council of Government and other equipment and new offices for the EMA.Carbon County has been working on the project since February.
