Carbon man who fired shots into wall during dispute pleads
A Carbon County man who fired shots into the wall of his home while his live-in girlfriend's four children were in the home pleaded guilty on Tuesday in the county court.
Matthew Lee Keim, 28, of 3 Garfield St., Junedale, Banks Township, pleaded guilty to one count each of simple assault, reckless endangering of another person, and endangering the welfare of children. Keim was originally charged with nine counts of discharge of a firearm in an occupied structure, two counts of simple assault, five counts of REAP, and four counts of endangering the welfare of children. All those charges were dropped, except the three he pleaded to in a plea bargain with the district attorney's office.Keim was charged by state police at Hazleton for an incident on Aug. 4, 2014, at his residence. The incident was tied to another domestic incident that occurred in Beaver Meadows.Kenneth R. Kondash, 37, of 32 Tamaqua St., Beaver Meadows, was at the Keim residence to talk to Keim and his girlfriend, who resides with Keim. He talked about killing his wife and mentioned a recent murder-suicide in Junedale.Keim's girlfriend wanted to warn Kondash's wife about the threats but Keim told her not to. That led to an argument.During the argument, troopers said, Keim fired four shots from a 9 mm handgun into a wall. The girlfriend's four children were in an upstairs room at the time. She then exited the home with her children but returned over concerns Keim might harm himself. When she returned she spoke with Keim and then left. He then fired five shots into a bedroom wall.Kondash was later charged by troopers for a incident at his residence. He is scheduled to plea guilty to charges related to that incident on April 2.In the plea bargain, the DA's office is recommending Keim be placed on probation. At yesterday's proceeding, presiding Judge Joseph J. Matika told Keim the court was not a party to the agreement and that he could impose a jail term if he felt it was appropriate.Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
