Schuylkill County plans fall cleanup at 15 sites

Get ready to clean up that garage and basement and get rid of those old tires, that defunct freezer, and the rusted-beyond-recognition jumble of metal.

Schuylkill County will hold its annual fall clean-up from Sept. 11 through Sept. 23.Commissioners on Wednesday approved the event, to be held at 15 sites. They are the Tamaqua Transfer Station, Pottsville, Hegins Township, Minersville, the CES Landfill, Girardville, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill Haven, Wayne Township, Porter Township, Pine Grove, Ringtown, New Ringgold, Mahanoy City borough, and Tremont borough. The fall clean-up accepts tires, appliances and bulky items, and is open to all Schuylkill County residents. But you'll have to make other arrangements for old television sets and computers.Electronics are not being accepted again this year, said county engineer Lisa Mahall."Last year we did not offer electronic recycling at our fall clean-up, and this year it would still cause the county a financial hardship," she said. The state no longer helps with the reimbursement for electronic recycling, Mahall said."In previous years, we collected between 500,000 and 600,000 pounds of electronics. The bids came in between 20 cents and 40 cents a pound. When you add that in with the other costs for recycling, it would cost well over $150,000. We just cannot sustain that, and the current market has declined even further."The situation is unfortunate, but we have no other choice," she said. Some companies do take electronics for recycling, but for a fee. They include AERC Recycling Solutions in Allentown.Household and automotive chemicals and paint are also not accepted. The state Department of Environmental Protection reimburses the county up to 50 percent of the cost of this event.Advertisements and the county website will list the exact locations. In a related matter, commissioners agreed to seek bids for the waste tire collection and recycling.Bids will be accepted in the controller's office until 3 p.m. July 31. Bid opening will be at the commissioners' work session on Aug. 2, with a tentative bid award at the board of commissioners' meeting on Aug. 10.
